The Salesforce Certified Platform Developer I (exam code PDI / Plat-Dev-201; PD1) is the primary Salesforce developer credential. This course prepares you for the exam: building and deploying custom applications on the Lightning Platform with code - Apex (classes, triggers, SOQL/SOSL, DML, governor limits, asynchronous Apex); testing and code coverage (75% minimum); Lightning Web Components (and Aura and Visualforce basics); the data model and security; declarative versus programmatic decisions; and debugging and deployment. You earn it by passing one exam (60 scored questions plus up to 5 unscored, 105 minutes) delivered by Pearson VUE - at a test centre or online - with the voucher purchased through Trailhead Academy. The passing score is around 68% (some sources cite 65% - confirm the current figure in the official exam guide). There is no prerequisite to sit; Salesforce recommends about 1-2 years of development experience with at least 6 months on the Lightning Platform, and this credential is the required prerequisite for Platform Developer II.
Salesforce developers are in strong demand, and Platform Developer I is the credential that opens the door. It proves you can build on the Lightning Platform with code - Apex, Lightning Web Components, SOQL, testing and deployment - and it is the required first step before Platform Developer II. Developer roles typically pay more than admin-only roles, making this a high-value move for your career.
