The Certified Information Privacy Professional / China (CIPP/CN) is the IAPP's certification for China's data protection laws. This course prepares you for the CIPP/CN exam: a foundational understanding of China's three major laws - the Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL), the Data Security Law (DSL) and the Cybersecurity Law (CSL); cross-border data transfer and data localisation; and how to maintain compliance while mitigating data risk. CIPP/CN is one of five regional concentrations of the CIPP, the IAPP's privacy-law certification. Each concentration covers the law of a region - China, Asia, Canada, Europe or the United States. It pairs naturally with a CIPM (which covers how to run the privacy program). There is no prerequisite to sit the exam. The exam is 90 multiple-choice questions over 2.5 hours (with an optional 15-minute break), delivered by Pearson VUE at a test centre or online. It is scored on a 100-500 scale with a passing score of 300 (a scaled score, not a percentage). Once certified, you hold the certification for a 2-year term and maintain it with 20 CPE credits and a maintenance fee.
China's data protection regime is one of the strictest and most distinctive in the world, with significant penalties and demanding cross-border and data-localisation rules. Organisations exposed to China - through operations, manufacturing, suppliers, customers or data flows - need people who understand PIPL, DSL and CSL. CIPP/CN shows employers you have that specialist knowledge. For a North American organisation with any China exposure, this is the certification that builds the in-house expertise to manage it. It pairs naturally with a CIPM for those who also need the privacy program.
