The Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) is the IAPP's certification for privacy program management - what the IAPP calls "operationalising privacy". This course prepares you for the CIPM exam: privacy governance and building a program framework; privacy operations and day-to-day program management; assessments such as Privacy Impact Assessments (PIA), Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIA) and Transfer Impact Assessments (TIA); individual-rights request workflows; incident and breach response; metrics and KPIs; managing AI risk in business operations; and continuously monitoring the legal landscape. CIPM is not jurisdiction-specific - it is about how to run a privacy program and applies anywhere. It pairs naturally with a CIPP (which covers the law of a region). There is no prerequisite to sit the exam.
Every organisation that handles personal data needs someone who can run its privacy program - not just know the law, but operate it. CIPM shows employers you can do exactly that: build the governance, run the operations, handle rights and incidents, and report on the program. Because it is not tied to one region's law, it travels with you anywhere, and it pairs naturally with a CIPP for professionals who want both the law and the program.

The Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) certification exam evaluates your ability to develop, implement, and manage privacy programs within an organization. Certification details verified on 17 August 2026. Confirm the current CIPM Body of Knowledge, exam format, fees and maintenance requirements on the IAPP site. CIPM is a full IAPP certification for privacy program management; the exam is 90 questions over 2.5 hours via Pearson VUE, scored 100-500 with a passing score of 300 (a scaled score, not 60%). It is ANSI-accredited. There is no prerequisite to sit. The certification runs for a two-year term and is maintained with 20 CPE credits and a maintenance fee.
CIPM is for the people who build and run a privacy program: - Privacy program managers - Data protection officers (DPOs) - Privacy analysts and consultants - Compliance and governance leads responsible for privacy There is no prerequisite to sit the exam. If you are new to privacy, our course builds the foundations you need. If you already hold a CIPP, CIPM adds the "how to run the program" to your "what the law says" - and a CIPP plus CIPM counts toward the Fellow of Information Privacy (FIP) designation.
