SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager (POPM) is the Scaled Agile certification for the people who own the product in a SAFe enterprise. In SAFe, the Product Owner works at the team level - owning and prioritising the team backlog - while the Product Manager works at the programme level, shaping the product vision and roadmap across an Agile Release Train. POPM covers both roles in a single two-day course. The certification is earned by attending the SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager course delivered by a certified SPC through an authorised Scaled Agile Partner, then passing the online POPM exam (access included, usually 30 days). There are no formal prerequisites to attend, though some product, business analysis or agile background helps. In this course you will learn how Product Owners and Product Managers work within SAFe, how to write and prioritise backlogs, how to connect strategy to execution, how to take part in PI Planning, and how to deliver value through the Agile Release Train. The current SAFe courses include AI-empowered ways of working. Your POPM certification is valid for one year and is renewed annually through your Scaled Agile membership. Note that SAFe POPM is a different certification from Scrum Alliance's CSPO and Scrum.org's PSPO - it is the SAFe-context version, and it covers both Product Owner and Product Manager roles.
As organisations adopt SAFe, they need Product Owners and Product Managers who understand how to work within it - owning backlogs, shaping product direction, and delivering value through the Agile Release Train. POPM signals exactly that capability, which is in demand wherever SAFe is used. For product people who already hold CSPO or PSPO, POPM is the natural addition when they move into a SAFe enterprise.

There are no formal prerequisites for the SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager course - anyone can attend. It is most useful, though, for people who shape products and want to do so within a SAFe enterprise. Some background helps. If you already hold a product certification such as CSPO or PSPO, you will find POPM builds naturally on it by adding the SAFe context - the Agile Release Train, PI Planning, and the split between the team-level Product Owner and the programme-level Product Manager. If product ownership is new to you, the course still covers what you need, but some experience makes it easier.
