CCDE training - Cisco's expert-level network design certification, earned through the 400-007 written exam and the scenario-based CCDE Practical Exam.
Group Enrollment with Friends or Colleagues |
The Cisco Certified Design Expert (CCDE) is Cisco's expert-level certification for network design - the design-focused sibling of CCIE. It is earned in two steps: pass the written exam, 400-007 CCDE, then pass the CCDE Practical Exam, a scenario-based design exam taken in a chosen elective technology area. This course prepares you for both, covering business-driven design; control-plane and data-plane design; security and resilience design; and your chosen elective (Cisco's current electives include AI Infrastructure, Large-Scale Networks, and On- Prem and Cloud Services). A few facts matter. CCDE tests design judgement, not device configuration - there is no physical device lab. Cisco does not publish a passing score - the written exam's threshold is not disclosed, and the Practical is graded pass/fail. Both exams are delivered by Pearson VUE (the Practical at professional testing centres). As a Cisco certification, it is valid for three years and is renewed by recertification (passing eligible exams or earning Continuing Education credits).
CCDE is one of the most respected design credentials in networking, proving you can make expert-level network design decisions - not just configure devices. It is often associated with network architect, design lead and principal consultant roles, where the job is to translate business needs into resilient, scalable network designs. Because it requires passing a demanding written exam and a scenario-based Practical, CCDE signals genuine design seniority.

CCDE is for experienced networking professionals moving into, or already working in, expert-level network design: - Network architects and design engineers - Design leads and principal consultants - Senior engineers moving from implementation into design - Experienced CCIE holders adding a design credential There is no formal prerequisite - you do not need CCNP or CCIE first - though CCDE assumes expert-level design experience.
How to earn it:
1. Build deep experience in network design - business-driven design, control-plane and data-plane design, security and resilience, and your chosen elective area.
2. Study the current 400-007 CCDE and CCDE Practical blueprints on Cisco's website, and choose your ...
The CCDE certification validates expert-level skills in designing complex, scalable, and resilient network infrastructures. The certification path combines the 400-007 written exam with a practical, scenario-based assessment that evaluates advanced network design expertise. Candidates are expected to demonstrate knowledge of network architecture, routing, security, scalability, resiliency, and design principles. Understanding the exam structure, key design domains, practical assessment, and certification requirements can help candidates prepare effectively and approach the certification with confidence.
