CompTIA PenTest+ is the recognised certification for penetration testing - authorised, ethical hacking. The best way to secure a system is to attack it the way a real hacker would (with permission), find the weaknesses, and fix them before a criminal can exploit them. PenTest+ proves you can do exactly that, professionally and legally. You will learn how to plan and scope an engagement (including the legal and ethical rules); perform reconnaissance and information gathering; scan for and identify vulnerabilities; exploit weaknesses across networks, applications, cloud and more; carry out post-exploitation; and - crucially - write clear reports that help the organisation fix what you found. The current exam (PT0-003) is hands-on, with performance- based questions. PenTest+ is the offensive counterpart to CompTIA CySA+ (which is defensive). It is earned by passing a single exam (PT0-003), taken at a Pearson VUE test centre or online with OnVUE proctoring. There is no formal prerequisite, though CompTIA recommends Network+ and Security+ (or equivalent) and around three to four years of security experience. It is also approved under the US Department of Defense 8140 framework for certain roles (confirm on comptia.org).
