The GitHub Foundations certification (exam GH-900) is the entry-level credential from GitHub (a Microsoft subsidiary). It validates foundational knowledge of Git version control, GitHub collaboration and the GitHub ecosystem. This course prepares you for the exam: Git and GitHub basics (repositories, commits, branches, merging); collaboration (forks, pull requests, code review, issues); project management (GitHub Projects and milestones); modern development (GitHub Actions and Copilot basics); privacy, security and administration basics (Dependabot, branch protection); and the benefits of the GitHub community and open source. A few facts that are specific to GitHub certifications - and different from Microsoft Azure exams. The fee is US $99 (varies by region), not US $165. The exam is multiple-choice and proctored, and returns a pass/fail result; GitHub does not publish a fixed numeric passing score, so treat any percentage you see online as an unofficial estimate. Since 1 July 2025, GitHub exams are booked with a Microsoft Learn account and delivered by Pearson VUE (online or at a test centre), and the badge appears in your Microsoft Learn profile.
GitHub is where a huge share of the world's software is built, and Git and GitHub skills are expected across development, DevOps and increasingly non-engineering roles. GitHub Foundations is the recognised way to prove you understand them. As an entry-level, no-coding, no- prerequisite certification, it is an accessible first credential - a strong starting point before more advanced GitHub certifications (Actions, Advanced Security, Administration, Copilot) or a useful complement to a broader cloud or DevOps path.
