The Certified Information Privacy Professional / Canada (CIPP/C) is the IAPP's certification for Canadian privacy law. This course prepares you for the CIPP/C exam: the federal private-sector law (the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, PIPEDA); the federal public-sector Privacy Act; provincial public- and private-sector privacy legislation; and how to apply Canadian privacy law in practice, including individuals' rights and organisations' obligations. CIPP/C is one of five regional concentrations of the CIPP, the IAPP's privacy-law certification. Each concentration covers the law of a region - Canada, Asia, China, Europe or the United States. It pairs naturally with a CIPM (which covers how to run the privacy program). There is no prerequisite to sit the exam. The exam is 90 multiple-choice questions over 2.5 hours (with an optional 15-minute break), delivered by Pearson VUE at a test centre or online. It is scored on a 100-500 scale with a passing score of 300 (a scaled score, not a percentage). Once certified, you hold the certification for a 2-year term and maintain it with 20 CPE credits and a maintenance fee.
Canadian organisations - and any organisation that handles Canadians' personal data - must comply with Canada's federal and provincial privacy laws. CIPP/C shows employers you know that law and can apply it: PIPEDA, the federal Privacy Act, and provincial legislation. It is the recognised certification for Canadian privacy professionals, and it is equally relevant to US organisations with Canadian operations, customers or data. It pairs naturally with a CIPM for those who also need the privacy program.
