The Certified Information Privacy Technologist (CIPT) is the IAPP's certification for privacy in technology. This course prepares you for the CIPT exam: the foundations of information security and privacy; privacy-by-design and privacy engineering; privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs); encryption, de-identification and technical privacy controls; data governance in technical systems; the privacy risks in specific technologies; and how to build privacy into products and the software development life cycle. CIPT is the technical certification in the IAPP family - for the people who build and run systems that handle personal data. Where the CIPP covers the law and the CIPM covers the program, CIPT covers the technology. There is no prerequisite to sit the exam. The exam is 90 multiple-choice questions over 2.5 hours (with an optional 15-minute break), delivered by Pearson VUE at a test centre or online. It is scored on a 100-500 scale with a passing score of 300 (a scaled score, not a percentage). CIPT is ANSI-accredited. Once certified, you hold the certification for a 2-year term and maintain it with 20 CPE credits and a maintenance fee.
Privacy laws increasingly require privacy to be built into technology - by design and by default. That means organisations need engineers, developers, security professionals and product owners who understand privacy and can implement it in systems. CIPT shows employers you can do exactly that: apply privacy-by-design, use privacy-enhancing technologies, and embed privacy into products and the software life cycle. It is the certification that bridges privacy and technology - and it cross-sells naturally with a CIPP or CIPM.
