SAFe Release Train Engineer (RTE) is the advanced Scaled Agile certification for the person who facilitates an entire Agile Release Train (ART). If a Scrum Master facilitates one team, the RTE facilitates the whole train - a group of teams working together - and is often described as the "chief Scrum Master" of the ART. The RTE plans and runs Programme Increment (PI) Planning, coaches leaders and teams, drives end-to-end value delivery, and coordinates across multiple teams and even multiple trains in a Solution Train. The certification is earned by attending a three-day RTE course delivered by an RTE-qualified SAFe Practice Consultant (SPC) through an authorised Scaled Agile Partner, then passing the online RTE exam (first attempt included). There are no hard prerequisites to attend, but this is an advanced course: SAFe knowledge is assumed, and hands-on experience with an ART and PI Planning is strongly recommended. In this course you will learn to prepare, plan and execute PI Planning, build a high-performing ART through servant leadership and coaching, foster relentless improvement, and coordinate value delivery across the enterprise. The current SAFe courses include AI-empowered ways of working.
The Release Train Engineer is one of the most senior facilitation roles in a SAFe enterprise, and every Agile Release Train needs one. RTE certification signals that you can coordinate and lead a whole train - a valuable, in-demand capability as organisations scale SAFe. For experienced Scrum Masters and SAFe practitioners, it is a clear step up in responsibility and seniority.

There are no hard prerequisites for the RTE course - you do not have to hold another certification to attend. But this is an advanced course, and it assumes you already understand SAFe. To get the most from it - and to pass the exam - Scaled Agile recommends: - A working knowledge of SAFe (many attendees have taken SAFe Agilist first) - Hands-on experience with an Agile Release Train and PI Planning - Several years of experience in areas such as software development, testing, business analysis, product or project management - Ideally, having launched or participated in at least one ART and one PI Planning event None of this is strictly required to enrol, but RTE is not a first SAFe course - if you are new to SAFe, start with SAFe Agilist and gain some ART experience first, then take RTE.
To be certified you must: 1. Attend the three-day RTE course, delivered by an RTE-qualified SPC. 2. Pass the online RTE exam (first attempt included). 3. Keep your certification active by renewing annually (Advanced tier).
