Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals is the entry-level AI certification for the Microsoft cloud, now earned through Exam AI-901. It proves you understand core AI concepts and responsible AI, machine learning fundamentals, computer vision, natural language processing and generative AI - and, in the refreshed 2026 exam, how to implement AI solutions with Microsoft Foundry (Microsoft's unified AI platform), including AI agents and Azure Content Understanding. AI-901 replaced the AI-900 exam, which retired on 30 June 2026. It earns the same certification ("Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Fundamentals"), so anyone who already holds AI-900 keeps it. The exam has about 40 to 60 questions in roughly 45 minutes, graded on a scaled score: you need 700 on a scale of 1 to 1000 to pass. Because scoring is weighted, 700 does not mean 70% of questions correct. The exam costs about US$99 (varies by region), is delivered through Pearson VUE (online or test centre), and has no prerequisites.
Azure AI Fundamentals is the recognised first step into AI on the Microsoft cloud - and a timely one, as AI reshapes every industry. It gives beginners the vocabulary and confidence to work with AI, machine learning, generative AI and agents, supports entry-level AI-adjacent roles, and is the gateway to the role-based Azure AI Engineer certification. Because it never expires and costs little, it is a low-risk, high-value first AI credential.
