The Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert credential (exam AZ-400) validates the ability to design and implement the end-to-end DevOps lifecycle on Azure. This course prepares you for the exam: continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) with Azure Pipelines and GitHub Actions; source control with Git; infrastructure as code using ARM, Bicep and Terraform; security and compliance in the pipeline, including GitHub Advanced Security; instrumentation, monitoring and feedback; a site-reliability-engineering (SRE) mindset; and communication and collaboration with Azure Boards and GitHub Issues. Important: AZ-400 has a required prerequisite. Microsoft awards the DevOps Engineer Expert credential only when you pass AZ-400 and already hold a qualifying Associate certification - Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) or Azure Developer Associate (AZ-204). DevOps engineering is one of the highest-value skill sets in cloud, and this is Microsoft's Expert-level credential for it. The Microsoft Azure DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400) certification exam evaluates your ability to design and implement DevOps practices across development and operations environments. It focuses on source control, continuous integration and delivery, infrastructure as code, security, monitoring, testing, release management, and automation using Azure DevOps and related Azure services. Understanding the exam structure, key technical domains, and certification requirements can help candidates prepare effectively and demonstrate their ability to build reliable, automated, and scalable DevOps solutions.
Certification details verified on 25 August 2026. Confirm the current AZ-400 exam study guide, format, passing score, fee and prerequisite on the Microsoft site. AZ-400 requires AZ-104 or AZ-204 (AZ-900 does not count). The exam is about 120 minutes via Pearson VUE, with a passing score of 700 on a 100-1000 scale and a fee of US $165 (varies by country). The certification is valid for 12 months and renews for free online through Microsoft Learn.
