The Texas Real Estate Broker License is the senior real estate license in Texas. Unlike a sales agent - whose license stays inactive without a sponsoring broker - a licensed broker can operate independently, run a brokerage, and sponsor sales agents. It is issued by the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) - it is a license, not a certification. To earn it, you complete 900 hours of education (270 qualifying hours - including a 30-hour Real Estate Brokerage course and Legal Update I and II - plus 630 related hours), meet the experience requirement (four years of active licensed experience in the last five years, totalling at least 720 experience points), complete the six-hour Broker Responsibility Course, then pass the TREC broker exam. You also complete fingerprinting and a background check.
