PMI-CPMAITM is PMI's certification for professionals who lead artificial intelligence initiatives. It was previously known as Cognitive Project Management in AI (CPMAI), and became a PMI credential after PMI acquired Cognilytica in September 2024. It exists because AI projects fail differently from software projects. They depend on data that may not be ready, on models whose behaviour cannot be fully specified in advance, and on ethical and regulatory questions that traditional project methods were never designed to answer. The CPMAI methodology addresses that directly, through a structured six-phase approach adapted from CRISP-DM and applied specifically to AI and machine learning delivery. This is a certification for people who manage AI work rather than build it. You are not expected to write code or train models. You are expected to know how to define the business problem, judge whether the data supports it, oversee model development and evaluation, and put a solution safely into live operation — responsibly, and with governance that will survive an audit. There are no prerequisites. PMI requires no prior project management, technical or AI experience, and no other certification. That makes PMI-CPMAI accessible to project managers moving into AI, to data and technology professionals taking on delivery responsibility, and to business leaders sponsoring AI programmes.
Organisations are investing heavily in AI and struggling to deliver it. The gap is rarely technical. It is that AI initiatives are being run with project methods designed for predictable software, against data nobody checked, with governance decided after the fact. PMI-CPMAI addresses that gap specifically. It is the credential for the person accountable for an AI initiative reaching production and staying there safely.

PMI-CPMAI has the lightest entry requirements of any PMI certification. There is no experience application to submit and no audit process, which is a meaningful difference from PMP® and PMI-ACP®. Once you complete the required prep course, you schedule your exam through Pearson VUE. PMI notes that while no experience is required, a background in project or product management and a working understanding of AI fundamentals will help you. The exam is scenario-based and tests judgement, not recall.
Prior project management experience
No prior AI expertise, coding, or programming experience is required to enroll in the PMI-CPMAI™ Certification. Designed for project managers, product managers, business analysts, consultants, technology leaders, and professionals seeking to advance their careers, this AI project...
